A Can Comparison

Postby Xenu » Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:21 pm

I know I've been doing a lot of these recently, but permit me this last vanity.

I'm currently copying the old Can discs for JWB, so I finally had the opportunity to actually do a lossless comparison between one of those discs and the only remaster I, uh, "own": Ege Bamyasi (which, I should note, is also probably the one most noted for a "change" in sound quality). I'm going to go with FLAC this time, as the MP3 encoding might destroy some of the subtler points 'ere.

First up: Vitamin C:

It edits back and forth between the two versions. I matched for volume, to make it fairer (old, quiet CD brought way up, remaster brought down slightly to account for compression). Remaster starts, edits at "mommy," edits at "beautiful," edits at "she." I also manipulated the ending, so you hear the cymbol on both the original (first) and remaster (second).

Next up is a section from Soup:

Same deal as above, volume adjusted. Soup is pretty compressed compared to the original.

Thoughts? (JWB?)
