This is probably old news to most of you but I just noticed that YMB is fake stereo on the Kids DVD. Was it fake stereo on the old VHS? Also, I'm really surprised that the complete London Coliseum show is apparently going to be on the upcoming Lerner film. That footage is really, really dark on the Kids DVD. Anyone know if this show was multitracked? Was the Tanglewood '70 show multitracked?

Apparently the complete '77 Kilburn show is going to be part of the Lerner film as well. I've never heard the boot. Is this show as bad as legend has it? I'm starting to think they just don't have much Who footage left if these are the highlights...

I'd have to pull out my VHS to see about YMB. I think it's mono on the soundtrack.

I'm pretty sure multis exist for Tanglewood. I think Concert File mentions this, and it certainly sounds like it on the 30 Years video. I've never understood why more of that show hasn't come out.

Yeah, there's clear separation (the usual Pete hard-right Ox hard-left) in the Tanglewood stuff on '30 Years.'

The only other London Coliseum footage I've seen is "Happy Jack" from the 'Who's Better' VHS. Not as dark as YMB, but not great either.

If the Kilburn gig is the best they can do for a whole Moon-era show, that project is in trouble.

Didn't the TKAA DVD producer specifically not use any Kilburn footage because he thought it was so bad?

The hell of it is, every mildly interested Who fan knows this isn't true. Consider what they could include, provided they could license it all:

-- High Numbers footage
-- Entire Monterey set
-- Entire Woodstock set
-- Oodles of '60s and '70s TV appearances (not just performances, either; that '74 Townshend interview on BBC2 is fantastic)
-- London Coliseum '69
-- Tanglewood '70
-- Denmark (I think?) '72
-- Charlton '74
-- Detroit '75
-- Shepperton '78
-- Chicago '79

Etc., etc., etc. And that's just the stuff that's been booted and/or released in pieces. For every minute of Who footage we've seen, there's probably an hour in the archives that we haven't.

AFAIK, whatever was filmed was released on the Monterey DVD box. IIRC, the only thing missing is Pictures of Lily - I guess there just wasn't footage of that song. Whatever the case, I don't think that set was really that strong. AQOWHA falls apart a few times.

Based on what I've heard, I couldn't disagree with Woodstock. Other than having almost no cymbal sound, the audio is really good. And the performance also seems good.

The Coliseum show always seemed lo-fi to me, both in terms of audio and video.

I'm quite familiar with the above material. I was thinking of pro shot, multi camera, multi-track audio of complete shows when I made that statement.

As Luke said I don't think there is any Monterey stuff that wasn't on the Criterion set. That '72 show you mentioned was only a few songs and the performance was really subpar. I don't think Detroit '75 was a multitrack recording and Shepperton wasn't really a concert. This doesn't leave much left in the way of Moon era pro shot concert footage. Wasn't film of the 1969 IOW show recently discovered?

The footage I really want to see is the complete '65 Richmond Jazz Fest appearance.

Yeah, he talks about it the DVD commentary. He basically said the performance was terrible. The complete show has been booted but I've haven't heard it. IIRC they play Who Are You without the synths.

Of course, to be fair and open minded (not having heard the show), we've heard for years how bad Woodstock was and how great IOW '70 was, neither of which I agree with.

That said, I'd much rather have an earlier show.

Does multitrack audio exist for the Charlton show in 30 Years? I believe that's mono video feed on there.

At this point I don't think many people would have the attitude of "give us top-notch stereo footage or give us nothing at all." Myself, I'd settle for a double DVD of concert highlights a la the Zeppelin set.

Wasn't the Zeppelin set professionally filmed/recorded?

Save for the stuff on the DVD menu's it was. IMO the Zep DVD is really well done. I'd like to see The Who set done in a similar fashion.
