Doug Hinman's "You Really Got Me"

Postby Xenu » Fri May 27, 2005 5:42 pm

Interlibrary Loan finally came through with this book, which arrived yesterday.

It's..exhaustive. That's the only word that does it justice. *Everything* is here, as far as I can tell, as long as it was released before 1993. Hinman makes a few errors (he insists for some reason that the CD version of Sgt. Pepper is remixed, and I noticed that he missed the truncated start of "Love Me 'til the Sun Shines" on the Japanese "Something Else" issue), but Jesus, these concerns are petty considering the overwhelmingly comprehensive nature of the book.

I'd also like to point out that Hinman pens perhaps the most succint and elegant (if not overwhelmingly technically accurate) explanations of the stereo/mono issue and the problems encountered during remastering that I've ever seen.

There's a sequel to this, no?

Since I'm too lazy to look on Google...what is this book?

A (mildly) illustrated Kinks world discography. Gigantic, but only covers through 1993.

Why does he bring up Sgt. Pepper?

While discussing the options available in digital mastering of old analogue tapes, he brings up the option of remixing from the multitracks, and uses the Pepper CD as an example...
