We all know about the different mixes of Mr Hyde, Call Me Lightning, I Can See For Miles, Happy Jack and the like.

Now Andrew Sandoval claims there are two mixes of this "Someones Coming": the UK single and the US single.

Now I'm pissed, because I thought I was done with my singles collection. I used the "Magic Bus" CD, so I'm guessing this must be the US mix.

Do any of you fuckers have the two singles to compare? I'm hoping that Andrew is somehow wrong.

He also claims, by the way, that the US single mix of "I Can See For Miles" is the same mix as the mono LP...something that completely contradicts my findings.

It is not out of question that they used different masters for subsequent single pressings. Maybe later US pressings were done from the LP master.

Think of Love Me Do (different recordings) or Pinball Wizard (stereo and mono) as examples.

Yeah, I suppose. I was just curious what you guys thought.

1) The Decca single of ICSFM that I've heard is identical to the Track.

2) What does Andrew say is different with Someone's Coming?

3) When was Pinball Wizard ever issued in mono?

"Pinball" was released as a mono 45 but it was a fold-down.

Here's what Andrew said on SHTV:

The mono See For Miles with the bass o.d. is the British single version. The US single version is the mix heard on the mono Sell Out (US & UK). The US and UK single mixes of Someone's Coming are each different. The UK mix (released 10/67) is a single-tracked vocal. The US version (released 7/68) has a dbl trkd vocal.

Then I said:

I hate to disagree, Andrew, but the US and UK singles of "I Can See For Miles" are the same mix...and a totally different mix to the mono LP. The single mix has NEVER appeared on CD, only an alternate mix for the BBC has.

Are you sure about "Someone's Coming"? I had no idea about that. The old "Magic Bus" CD is the only place you can get an original mono mix from a tape source. I wonder which mix it is? Are you thinking of "Call Me Lightning" maybe?

I have the original black label Track UK single, orig black label Decca single, UK Track mono Sell Out and US black label mono Decca Sell Out and I am positive about my obeservations - however, I don't doubt that there may be mix variations on other pressings. I am simply telling you what I personally heard on these original pressings.

As for someone's coming, I am also positive about this. I came to all of these findings after assembling my own home Who single collection and purchasing original pressings of every single (save for the High Numbers - which I borrowed from a friend). I A/B'd every US and Uk single up through Who Are You.

However, I don't doubt there may be other mix variations out there and furthermore the disinformation of the reissues and the bootleg CD which claimed to have the single versions have clouded many of these arguments. The only way to be sure is to have the US and UK non-reissue vinyl.

I got the UK seven inch today, and Andrew was right.

The single has a single vocal, and the "Magic Bus" LP is double-tracked.

The "Magic Bus" CD is plagued with dropouts, and the "Rarities" CD is a poor needle-drop.

It looks like the UK single will be the source for my Singles Collection.

He's still wrong about "Miles" though.

So which CD sources are single/double tracked?

Both CD sources are the double-tracked version. I guess this is why we never noticed.

The version on "Rarities" is a needle-drop of the double-tracked version. Did it ever appear on a Track comp? If not, they probably used a "Magic Bus" LP. There is a big chew-up in the first couple bars that appears on both CD's.

So I guess both sides of "Miles/Someone's" are unavailable on CD.

This would all be nice if I even had a passing interest in that song...

I know...it's a real turd. But oh well.

Of course, I did have to do a dub of the stereo In The City...
