The 1973 single mix of 5.15

A Track 7" of 5.15 turned up in the post today. It turns out this mix is totally different from the LP (a shock). It's a truly awful mix - it's drowned in reverb, and most of the things that need to be up front in the mix, are pushed way back.
Here's a rather large sample:

Probably explains why you never see it on CD.

Boy, that is weird. The guitars are right up in your face, which I normally might love, but it's not really appropriate for this song. And is this mono, or just a really narrow stereo mix? I detect a hint of separation, but not much.

Seems to be narrow stereo.

That's how it is. I thought it was a wiring fault on the TT at first. Flipped it over to play Water, and the stereo seperation was all there.

Needless to say, that is *nothing* like whatever it is they put on the Singles Box.

I just heard it too, transferred it to wav yesterday. It is indeed dreadful, folded in stereo. Alas, I still have to use it for the UK Singles Collection I'm working on.

Is this thing actually distinct from an edited, folded-in, poorly-EQed version of the original stereo mix?

Yes. The piano is just unbelievably loud during the end guitar solos, while the vocals are drowned in a glittery reverb throughout. Folding something in would normally give the impression of less reverb on things (providing the effect is panned across the stereo), but this has a hell of a lot more than any mix I've heard.

Well, they could have added more reverb...
...I'm not saying they did, but...

... which would result in the guitars having more reverb aswell. Except, they are dry as a bone.
