Johnny Griffin's A Blowing Session - best digital source?

Postby dcooper » Mon Mar 21, 2005 12:25 pm

Last week during a trip to NYC, I saw a great show by Johnny Griffin at the Blue Note. Roy Hargrove sat in for 2 songs, and although at the age of 77 Griffin is no longer the fastest tenor sax player in the world, he still had some killer solos and his between song chatter was great.

Well, now I want to pick up a few of his CDs. I used to own "A Blowing Session" (with Coltrane and Hank Mobley) on vinyl, but the CD version is one of those dreaded Van Gelder editions. Does anyone know of a good sounding version of this CD?

There should be a pre-RVG version of this disc out there; it's oop, but should be relatively easy to find. This was an earlier RVG, so it might not be that bad - though, if not already mono, it may be narrowed. (I don't have this one myself.) Some of the RVG's are great; others suck.
