That was the one before their lyricist/frontman quit the band to devote his life to Jesus, right?

Here's some of my favorite bad prog lyrics:

The Miracle
Emerson, Lake and Powell

So here we stand between the gates
Upon the dawn the eagle waits
His talons shine like daggers
On the wings of revolution
In pain the madman staggers
But there is no solution

Another sword upon a throne
But now the jester laughs alone

Beneath this cloak of treason
Appears a thousand faces
The truth must stand to reason
For those who's heart it chases

Beyond the world of mortal man
Within this sanctuary the spectre begins to tremble
They lay his spear upon the plan

On a sea of diamonds lies a ship of glass
Through the mist the torches pass

Their banners fly in splendour
The ghosts of night decended
With grace their souls surrender
The seal must be defended

Still the dragons reign supreme
Breathing fire till we scream
They leave us nothing but our dreams

No shield can save us
It's gonna take a miracle
We're searching for a miracle
It's gonna take a miracle
We're searching for a miracle

Stand clear, there's storm above
And there is something left to fear
All speed, before the blade is drawn
And there is blood upon the seed

Let no one yield we're on the field
Where deeds eclipse the sun
Where the brave are told on a thread of gold
The tapestry is spun
As they speak of dreams their amour gleams
There's calm before the storm
But all can see their destiny
The bishop takes the pawn

In the sky the arrows fly
Each one to it's mark
Defend the true lead us through
This voyage in the dark
Make us strong you know right from wrong
Teach us what it's worth
Cos every heart that aches is what it takes
To save our mother earth

Lay your life upon the line
It's death for glory every time
You give up yours and I'll keep mine

No shield can save us
It's gonna take a miracle
We're searching for a miracle
It's gonna take a miracle
We're searching for a miracle

So here we stand between the gates
Upon the dawn the eagle waits
His talons shine like daggers
On the wings of a revolution
In the pain the madman staggers
But there is no solution

Still the dragons reign supreme
Breathing fire till we scream
They leave us nothing but our dreams

No shield can save us
It's gonna take a miracle
We're searching for a miracle
It's gonna take a miralce
We're searching for a miracle

Dunno. I don't actually own any Spock's Beard.

Well, duh. Maybe I should have dropped the "pretentious" and kept the "twat."

Twats aren't in short supply among producers either. Some of the most successful...

e.g., what is Phil Spector if not a Napoleonic, deranged little twat?

"The Miracle' reminds me of something...can't think what it is...oh wait, I can:

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

I know in my heart I should dislike what Led Zeppelin stands for because they ripped off the black man's blues (and Spirit), but The Immigrant Song rules.

You have to admit that Plant's lyrics were usually the weak link, though.

I think even he says that, these days.

I remember an interview back in the late eighties where Plant admitted his writing skills were lacking -- "Ever notice I almost never wrote a chorus?"

Plant's lyrics were weak, but I think Immigrant Song was one of his best lyrical efforts. I'm a weak lyricist when I try to write songs, so I might not judge with the best criteria, at any rate. I mostly listen to the instrumentation and beat, I'm shallow that way.

But yes, D'yer Maker, Hey Hey What Can I Do, Stairway to Heaven, Tall Cool One, and many others are decidedly not poetic masterpieces.

The most memorable line in any Zep song is "squeeze me baby (my lemon) till the juice runs down my leg..." and they didn't write it.

I wonder how many Zep fans know that. I didn't for a long time.

Ian Anderson once pissed Plant off when he mused that Zep was a stronger band musically at the time but not lyrically, or that their music with his lyrics would be really cool.

Thanks for the Lizard lyrics. I recently sold my copy of that album and this thread is justifying that decision.
