OK.
While Hendrix people, for example, complain about how complicated their particular avatar's catalogue is, I don't think anything EVER can come close to the horror that is T-Rex.
Dig: About 6 issues of each album. That whole "Unchained" series. That "alternate albums" series which may or may not duplicate Unchained stuff. Several thousand other rarities comps that somehow aren't bootlegs. It blows my mind that Rhino can advertise ANYTHING as "previously unreleased" on their latest reissue of Electric Warrior (which, of course, has about 50,000 CD variants, any of which can be the best).
Any fans here want to explain this layout to me?

There is some good stuff out there for TRex, but unfortunately, you have to look verrrrrrrrrrrry carefully.
EEEEsssh ! The Alan Douglas Years...slowly I turn ! At least the Hendrix Estate put the recordings into some kind of sensible order, and Plan, in addition to the Beat-The- Bootlegs "Dagger Label".
What about the Beach Boys ? Considering the mish mash of cheesy compilations that it's disintregrated into, it's a big mess too ! How many variations can they come up with, before they just stop ???? Eventually, there will be nothing left but the "Sea of Tunes" session material, and that would be a REAL treat to listen to, officially !!!!!

I still think the Hendrix discography makes just about anyone else's look sensible.
I'm not into T. Rex. I like the Tyrannasaurous Rex stuff.
The thing is, though, that Marc's catalogue just confuses me to no end...and I think people are misinterpreting what I want to know. I know that there're boxed sets out there that distill this material, yada yada. What I want to know, however, is the sense behind what *is* out there. Do these "Unchained" things overlap with the "Alternate" albums? How many versions of Electric Warrior *are* there? Is there anything that hasn't been released?

OK, Captain Anal, why don't you now explain how you're "not into" the Small Faces despite owning 59 copies of Ogden's Nutty Flakes?

I've shyed away from the official album comps, after the "Unchained" series and the recent spate of 2fers.
I also have this box set that I posted the tracklisting to. Considering it's a compilation, it presents a verrrrrrry fair assessment of his career, with LOTS of rarities !
After all of that, I just started going after the NMC/Pilot rarities stuff, as well as three "Shadowhead" titles from some obscure UK label dedicated to T Rex, and the fan club issues are next on my list.
For me, the Tony Visconti revisionist remixes are to be, generally, approached verrrrrrrrry carefully. I just don't trust a music person when the want to re-write history...ultimately the Music suffers, no matter what approach is done. It all comes down to personal taste, I guess.
I'm sure the mess, is the result of Marc's careless, hippy dippy approach to his business concerns, so after he's dead, the vulture's just gather around, and well, you know the story.
For some reason, I feel Phil Lynott is the next artist to go down this road. It's a pain in the butt, but what else can a Fan expect, right ????
The Small Faces are an extreme example of when The Vultures take advantage of the Fan's ignorance and Temptation !!!! Can't blame anyone for being a Loyal Fan, right ?

Hmph. Well, it was during the period where that sort of thing was a novelty...'sides, I really was *trying* to like it. I thought it justified it, somehow. Frankly, I had never seen that many copies of a "big" release (Odessey and Oracle, for all of its variations--Rhino, Razor, Repertoire, Big Beat, Teichiku v. 1, Repertoire V. 2, Teichiku V. 2--does not even come *close* to Ogden's insofar as endless recycling is concerned).
