I've got The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life on Barking Pumpkin (with the original cover), but nothing on Zappa.

Are you talking about the older versions of the CDs (pre-Ryko) or the "Zappa catalog-Phase II" mentioned at Zappa.com?
Does anyone know what's going on with the catalog now that the Ryko licensing deal is over?

In the fantasy world that I live in, the ZFT will give control of the catalog to a good reissue label that actually gives a shit, and we'll see:
--the original mix of
Hot Rats getting its first official CD release
--the shitty re-recorded/remixed version of
Cruising with Ruben and the Jets banished to the dustbin of history and replaced once and for all with the original Verve version
--an official CD release for the mono versions of
Freak Out and
Absolutely Free--a single-disc version of
Uncle Meat without all of the horrible "bonus" tracks
--well-mastered versions of everything else
Of course, none of this will ever happen.
Is there any other major artist who was more clueless about sound quality than Zappa. Given the anal nature of his tape archiving, how is it possible that he and now the FZT have done such a shitty job with his digital legacy?
Yeah...I'm not holding my breath for any of those things.

The only 'Zappa' label CD I have is Shankar's 'Touch Me There', but it is also credited as a 'Barking Pumpkin' release...
A quick scan reveals all my Zappa CDs to be either RykoDisc or Barking Pumpkin.

I have that one also.

Neither. This seems to be confusing a lot of people, so I'll exegete briefly. Pre 1995-Ryko catalogue standardization, Zappa releases came out on a variety of imprints. The US releases were mostly Ryko, but a few were Barking Pumpkin (Man From Utopia, Roxy, the Lather albums, etc.). In Europe, everything was on Zappa Records, except if it was on EMI.
Problematically, there do appear to be odd variations both in actual content and in claimed content. For example, the Zappa Records release of Joe's Garage claims to be a digital remix. Is it? I've never heard a copy. I'd really like to sort all of this shit out for the patio without having to, like, BUY the things.

I only own the current Rykos, and have quite a few of them now. I had some of the original CD releases back when they were originally released but lost a lot of CDs in a home burglary in 1993. If you are asking about the sound quality, I honestly don't remember how they compared to the current set.
