At first, I think this qualifies for the stupidest idea ever. They made one "classic" album, one rip-off compilation, were cynically formed by a fashion designer to deliberately make waves, and they get nominated for the Hall of Fame (for the 3rd time). Every year, I grumble about the idiotic, political, anti-democratic wrangling that constitutes the RnRHoF, and it just gets worse. Can we float it out to the middle of Lake Erie now?

Actually, I know what qualifies for the stupidest idea ever: U2 nominated for the Hall of Fame.

Kudos to John Lydon for not wanting inclusion in the Hall.

As far as I'm concerned, there are four acts in the last fifty years that qualify as "before and after" acts -- those people that, regardless of artistic merit, impacted the "scene" to the extent that it's common to think of what came before them and what came after them as distinctly different. They are Elvis, the Beatles, the Sex Pistols and Nirvana.

I happen to think the Pistols and Nirvana are both wildly overrated (and Elvis and the Beatles completely blown out of all rational proportion), but you can't deny their impact.

True to that. I do like some of the music by the Sex Pistols, as well as their irreverent image. My screed is much more about the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame than the Sex Pistols. However, I think in a strange way that the Sex Pistols's presence on the music scene created as much damage as it benefited, particularly as it related to style vs. substance.

In the end, I guess it's the old Time Magazine Man of the Year question. People got bent out of shape when they named Khomeni, Hitler, etc., but they always said it was about impact, not "merit." I guess you could look at the Pistols and the RRHOF the same way.

As far as the RRHOF itself, I've never ascribed a whole lot of import to it. It's fun to argue about the inductions, but in the end it's just a big tourist attraction. In that capacity, it's fine. (Lots of cool stuff to gawk at.)

I normally pay no attention to the inductee list whatsoever...but I have to admit that it would have irritated me if the Sex Pistols had been inducted before the Ramones.
