A local shop had an MCA copy of LAL, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.

Have you done this comparison yourself?
I wouldn't be surprised if LAL had a "silent upgrade" at some point--it's one of the earlier discs, no?--but it's really a "silent upgrade of what, to what?" sort of thing.
