Here's the UDI/UDII thread:

I thought the latest subject of debate had something to do with UD vs. UD2, referenced by Xenu above.

But your post appeared below Ryan's post, not Xenu's, so how was I to know that you were referring to Xenu's? Ryan's referred to the thread he and thomh have been contributing to on shtv -- which URL I reposted. It's not the one on UDI vs UDII.

What can I say...I'm damn confusing!

Are we doing that FAQ or not?

The Who thing? I'm definitely game. I've got all these ICEs sitting around -- I could start writing a history of the reissue project using the interviews as source material.

Or whatever.

Or are you talking about a "Digital Audio for Dummies" FAQ?

I'm talking about everything. I entertained for a while an "Artists on CD" series, starting with the Stones one and continuing with The Who one.

Ryan, would you be at all interested in helping out re. the next update of the Stones FAQ?

I'm far more of a Who geek than a Stones geek (though I'm definitely a Stones fan), so I'm not sure I could contribute much in the way of content, but I could certainly do some HTMLization or something like that. (That is what I do for a living from time to time.)

I guess a "Beatles on CD" FAQ would be pretty damn short, huh?

What I need someone to do for the Stones FAQ is do the "songs listing," which I simply cannot bring myself to do. That's really what's standing in the way of an update.

And a Beatles FAQ might finally clear up the Singles/EP/CDs difference.

I had gotten started on it a while back. This is what I mean:

"Not Fade Away": [England's Newest Hit-Makers, Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) US and UK, More Hot Rocks, More Hot Rocks 1]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound, with overdubs being added during further bounces. Issued in place of "I Need You Baby (Mona)" on the American version of the Stones' first album (Englands Newest Hit-Makers). Sounds largely the same everywhere; the ABKCO remaster version is clearly re-eqed, with the London version being "cleaner."

"Route 66": [England's Newest Hit-Makers, The Rolling Stones]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound, with overdubs being added during further bounces. Slightly dull on ABKCO's first disc of Hit-Makers. The London version is very "clean" in contrast to the eqed version on the remaster of Hit-Makers, but it isn't a terribly noticeable difference.

"I Just Want to Make Love To You": [England's Newest Hit-Makers, The Rolling Stones, The Singles Collection]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound, with overdubs being added during further bounces. Sounds largely the same on most issues. The ABKCO remaster version has clearly been re-eqed.

"Honest I Do": [England's Newest Hit=Makers, The Rolling Stones]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound, with overdubs being added during further bounces. Sounds largely the same on most issues. The ABKCO remaster version is more "aggressive" than previous versions, with clearly re-eqed bass and treble and a slightly-compressed dynamic range. Re-recorded by the Stones for the "Hope Floats" soundtrack.

"Now I've Got a Witness: (Like Uncle Phil and Uncle Gene)" [England's Newest Hit Makers, The Rolling Stones]

This instrumental, like the other tracks on the first album, was recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound. Sounds largely the same across the various issues.

"Little By Little": [England's Newest Hit-Makers, The Rolling Stones, The Singles Collection]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound. The ABKCO remaster is slightly more “aggressive” than previous versions, but sounds largely the same.

“I’m a King Bee”: [England’s Newest Hit-Makers, The Rolling Stones]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound. The ABKCO remaster is slightly more “aggressive” than previous versions, but sounds largely the same.

“Carol” (Studio Version): [England’s Newest Hit-Makers, The Rolling Stones]

Recorded directly to mono at Regent Sound. The ABKCO remaster is slightly more “aggressive” than previous versions, but sounds largely the same.

etc. Clearly, I stopped right before "Tell Me" would have forced me to go into paragraphs of explanation...^_^

Gotcha. I'm nowhere near conversant enough with Stones lore to be of much help there, I'm afraid.

In the immortal words of Lou Costello, "Oh, I'm a baaaaaaad boy"

You know, Ryan, when I see replies like Markus' and not to mention that b&w character, I am reminded of the subject of this thread.

That place is supposed to be moderated but they let people like him and others spew forth drivel that just flies straight in the face of logic and reason and *none* of the gorts even *try* to arrest them. Are the gorts as ignorant themselves? If so, then that is pretty scary. Hell, you would think SH, who's in the business, must read some that stuff and wonder. Or has he something to gain from these ignoramuses. Hmm....

I tried to explain in that thread and others why I believe some views held there are faulty by politely presenting objective information and I get slammed each time.

Jeez.

Well, since it's the stated policy of the forum that discussing rational approaches to measuring perceived differences in sound quality is discouraged...

My impression during my tenure thre was: Hoffman believes that subjective perception trumps *everything*. So if you think you heard it, you can assume it's real unless proven otherwise. End of story. And the Gorts, a couple of whom claim in emails to me to be more 'skeptical' than not, indulge him in that belief. "It's his group."

None of which excuses the sheer ignorance of points of fact, that the Markuses of the group espouse.

Rspaight, I loved this one:

Why does analog have to beat digital objectively in order for it to be OK to prefer it subjectively?
