My comparisons were done with the SACD layer. Of course, I was forced to use redbook for remastering. But I burned a copy of the redbook so I could do an A/B SACD/redbook comparison, and they sounded identical. Even if I could perceive any difference in resolution, I was more concerned with finding an inferior tonality on the redbook.

In general, I like SACDs because they are often are mastered with more of a "hands off" approach, and sometimes that's exactly what an album needs. I've never heard an appreciable difference in resolution...but maybe my equipment isn't "brutally revealing."

I picked up an RCA Bowie of "Young Americans" and wasn't all that impressed. It does have nice bass but you need to turn it up to enjoy because it was so mastered so low.

Had it not been $7.00, I probably would've passed. I should be able to get about $50-$60 on eBay, right?

Maybe $20 on ebay. If you're patient, wait until two weeks before Christmas. The bids tend to get higher around that time.

BTW, I have NOT heard the RCA "Young Americans," but I'd at least keep a complete CD-R copy: the Rykodisc is a different, inferior mix, and the Virgin remaster is a really crappy mastering of the original mix. The RCA uses the original mix, and I'd take the RCA discs over Virgin anyday.

What if I had "stunning" in the description? That's $20 right there.

I will agree with that statement. Though the RCAs are flawed, I'm not a fan of the Virgin discs.

The Rykos never bothered me personally, JMHO.

I have the same impression of the RCA Low and "Heroes" discs. I bought the Virgin versions as well, but in the end, for Low at least, I went back to my Ryko Au20.

The Ryko Au20 uses the original mix. This is the disc I prefer.

In that case, the Ryko AU20's may be the way to go. They're a little sharp for my tastes and may have a little bit of peak limiting, but they're WAAAY better than the Virgins. Just EQ them a bit.

The Ryko's are the ones done by Bob Clearmountain (or was it Toby Mountain)?
I rememeber them sounding rather thin. I'm happy with the Virgins. Haven't heard the
gold Rykos.

LOL. Now I remember. What a pretentious twat. He should have been producing Roxy Music albums instead.
