Ahh, the Beach Boys pastmasters...

Just what the name says.

In a straight comparison with the PM it was about a 50/50 split...but most of the Mofi winners happened to be bested by the DCC tracks. In other words, if you have the DCC and the Pastmasters you don't need the Mofi IMO. That was disappointing...plus I was surprised at how much better the Surfer Girl needle drop sounded than the Mofi CD...the needle drop had a richer, fuller sound. I don't recall the tonality differences between the Mofi and the PM.

FWIW, I think the Linetts for Surfer Girl and Surfin' USA are two of the weaker Linetts.

If anybody wants me to do a meaningful comparison, can someone get me some quick samples (WAV/FLAC, preferrably) of at least one track from Shut Down, Vol. II in its 1990 and 2001 incarnations? I have the mini-LP and Pastmasters now...

Is the Mini-LP peak-limited/clipped ?

(I have the 2001 remaster, but it will me take until tomorrow to send you a sample. I do not have the 1990 twofer.)

I just did some heavy listening to the beginning of "Don't Worry Baby," and I'm pretty sure I hear no-noise. I'll do something more scientific (like comparing it to another version of "Don't Worry Baby") tomorrow.

I do have one disc of overlap! I have both the mini-LP and 1990 CD of "Concert."

Result: the former is derived from the latter, although with slightly different indexing and perhaps a touch of EQ (they don't cancel exactly, but they stay in sync).

Actually, I just listened to the MoFi...it does, in fact, sound a bit odd. It has a bit of a "murky" sound, which surprised me. I'll post comparison clips later today.

I watched the Beach Boys on a PBS Fourth of July special yesterday. They were great!

"Love's role as the band's front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock's foremost songwriters. Surfin', the Beach Boys' first hit, came from his pen. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, Love wrote the classics Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda, California Girls and the Grammy nominated Good Vibrations. Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by co-writing the irresistible and chart-topping Kokomo."

What a flattering autobiographical description, Mr. Love.
