Any opinions on the 2004 remaster of the Final Cut?
I had the LP back when it came out, but was into rock 'n roll & found it too dense and cumbersome to enjoy, so I never bought the CD. However, now I'm over the DSOTM --> The Wall period, and am starting to get into the earlier stuff, so I decided to give the Final Cut another chance and just bought the new remaster.
I think it's a terrific album. Much more honest and straightforward than The Wall (and not as gimmicky), perhaps the best lyrics Waters has ever written. As for the sound? I think the 2004 remaster sounds great. The album has kind of a tinny and artificial mix that no remastering is going to completely fix, but how could anyone possibly say it was unlistenable? I'm annoyed that I listened to those guys at SH and avoided buying the CD when it came out last year.

I've always thought that whole sequence on side two (from Fletcher to Final Cut), was some of Waters' best songwriting.
Now I want to listen to this again.
I'm happy with the sound of the 90s version. Does "Tigers" really add anything?

I don't think it necessarily adds anything, but it does flesh out the "big ideas" of the album a little bit, and since I don't have the compilation, I'm glad to have a digital version of that song (not including the DVD of the movie). One of the criticisms I've read is that it interrupts the flow of the album, and I couldn't disagree more. I think it was strategically placed where it was to set up the suite of songs on side 2, and it is nicely blended with "One Of The Few" to feel like an extension of that song.
I wouldn't recommend you run out and buy it for that song or the new mastering, particularly if you're happy with the previous version, but I'm glad I picked it up.

I haven't heard it, but I tend to think that "Tigers" would interrupt the flow, at least for me. I would probably start thinking about The Wall and then memories would stop flooding my mind with bliss.

See it doesn't bother me as much mainly because I wasn't familiar with the original tracklisting so I think it's fine, but while I do like the song, I could really take it or leave it on the album since I have Echoes.
And you're right, it does make you think of the Wall.

Well, there seems to be Floyd bashing on even the Sax remasters (which I think are excellent IMHO) as of late. Must have to do with the phases of the moon or something.
So you bypassed the CD originally too because of sh.tv?
One thing I am curious about though is if Doug Sax will be involved in the mastering of the supposed SACDs of "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals." I was surprised that he wasn't involved with this issue.
