At this point, I can't imagine that there can't be much more unheard Beatles/Stones/Beach Boys/Dylan/Who, et al. studio material. You know, except for stray (perhaps mythical) things like "Carnival of Light", how much is really left?

What Xenu said. There might very well be few/no unreleased songs left, but there are certainly tons of unreleased takes. Even looking at the Beatles, while a good chunk of session tapes have leaked out over the years, tons more haven't. Most of the full reels are early (pre-Pepper) sessions, and even then they are scattered.

And as far as the Stones and Who go, what *has* come out?

Of course, Studio 2 Sessions isn't something I listen to every day, but I still think it's pretty damn cool.

There is loads of interesting unbooted Beatle material. Here's a few off the top of my head..

- unedited version of Doctor Robert

- Got to Get You Into My Life without horns

- Love You To take 1 (George on acoustic and vocals with Paul harmony)

- Baby I'm a Rich Man outtakes

- the rejected 2nd remake of While My Guitar Gently Weeps

- Paul's White Album outtake Etcetera

- Paul's demos of Woman and A World Without Love

Re. "Life" without horns...I actually think the Anthology remix of that (WITH horns) is astonishing. The song gains a lot of power with the horns spread out around the stereo spectrum. Additionally, the drums--which are really anemic and distant on the standard stereo mix--are actually, y'know, audible.

Delightful. I want more than 20 seconds of it.

I agree. After hearing that snippit on Anthology I can't listen to the original mixes anymore.

As much as I like the Beatles, their bootlegs aren't that enjoyable. It's a cliché, but the Beatles came close to batting a 1.000 when it came to picking the master take. Even the Spector version of Let It Be did all right in that department.

Right now, the best stuff Apple hasn't released on CD or DVD, IMO:

The Complete Hollywood Bowl concerts (1964-1965)
The Complete Rooftop Concert
The Complete BBC Recordings

I suppose the mono mixes count too, that should be part of a comprehensive reissue program of the actual albums.

I don't think there's anything else that's unaccounted for, at least by Lewisohn.
