Allegedly from the "Necrophilia" boot. It's in narrowed stereo, but I'm most intrigued by the high-end. Is it an outfake? An alternate mix? What the heck is "Necrophilia?"

Interesting. I can't compare now - perhaps tomorrow.

Initially it did sound like an outfake of some sort, but the more I listen, it seems to be the real deal. Although...it seems like there might be some added overdubs in places. WTF?

"Think" may be the song I'm least familiar with on Aftermath. At the very least, the EQ of this version is completely different, to the point where it actually sounds like a decent recording...and I don't think this is just a byproduct of hte vinyl playback.

I've never heard it, but I think it was another of the 'planned outtake compilations' that got scrapped, before we got 'Metamorphosis' instead. A bootleg surfaced on vinyl and later CD, but as far as I know there's nothing unique on it:

Yeah, it seems mostly that way. Most of the album is Metamorphosis, in the same crappy-sounding mixes (maybe this is when they were made)? I was intrigued by it because of "Dues" (which does sound decent on that boot), "Think" (which is the odd thing I've linked to above) and "Good Times," which may or may not be an alternate mix.

The rest of this material has surfaced in better quality (and without nearly as much processing) in subsequent years.

I lied. It's in stereo...sorta? I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. Those are different vocals, right?

Man, this shit is *strange*. I just did a *quick* comparison, but the lead vocal and basic backing (lead guitar included) is most certainly identical to the original. At least some of the backing vocals in the right channel seem to be original, while the chick in the left channel most certainly isn't. It sounds like there *might* also be some vibes/bells in there (right channel), although it's hard to tell, as the transfer leaves a bit to be desired.

Seems to be similar to some of the overdubs on Metamorphosis (Out Of Time comes to mind). I knew this was done on 3-track, but this at least shows the tapes weren't just left at RCA. Too bad ABKCO doesn't go back and do proper stereo remixes of that stuff.

I finally did a direct comparison with the London CD version.

Wow. I knew the original sounded bad, but next to this it sounds *really* bad. There's zero high end on the original, and EQ pretty much just gets you lots of tape hiss.

I'd still love to hear all of that RCA material properly remixed in stereo some day.

Same here. Think of the glimmers of high-end we get on the London CD ("Lady Jane"), and apply it to...well, basically everything. From the example of "Think," it seems as if some of those tracks we regard as hopelessly muddy ("Take It Or Leave It") might actually be salvagable.

FWIW, I think I do hear some subtle backing vocal overdubs. It also seems like there's another instrument playing the guitar riff (the electric one) that sustains it for slightly longer.

I'd probably say What To Do is one of the best sounding on that album, albeit far from the best musically.

Yep. Longer sustain, mixed left-center. Also some additional vocals in the same place. And some noodling in the solo and at the end.

Once again...strange. Why Think and Good Times? Why remix and add overdubs that can barely be heard? That mix of Good Times is even stranger. I know many of the Metamorphosis tracks have overdubs, but those were unreleased (and usually mono originally).
