Byrds mono mixes

Postby Chris M » Wed Jun 22, 2005 11:39 pm

Apparently the new MOFI is releasing a SACD of the mono Mr. Tambourine Man. I don't think I've ever heard a Byrds mono mix save for the handful of mono tracks on the reissues. What am I missing?

I have a mono MTM, and I don't recall it being much different.

As it happens I just bought a mono MTM LP last weekend. I played it last night, and I agree ... this isn't a case of night-and-day differences.

You have to be kidding.

That's one of the strangest things I've ever heard.

Wow, MoFi actually has the Zappa Money listed on their site now as well. ("Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is proud to release this ULTRADISC II™ 24K Gold CD featuring GAIN 2™ remastering from the original 1968 Verve / Bizarre mixes." I assume that means stereo mixes, and stereo only.)

The MTM SACD is certainly a surprising choice. It won't be an automatic buy for me, but I'll be interested to see what others think ...

I should note that Joe Travers totally gave me the brush off on the whole Money issue.

I hope it's not the '95 Ryko master.

Of course it is. If the Vaultmeister knwos nothing about it, where did they get the tape from? Also, I should probably point out that almost the entire run of MoFi's new gold-discs are "taken from already existing digital masters. It's the "even we can't justify trying to make an SACD of this" approach.

Well, it's nice that MoFi has chosen a new demographic to disappoint.
