A quick Who rundown on CD

Postby MK » Wed Mar 23, 2005 2:31 pm

Damn it, all these Who threads got to me.

Anyway, just a quick rundown of the albums, what's the best choices on CD?

1. My Generation - stereo mix, the Deluxe Edition is the only choice, but if I want the original mono version, is the old CD pretty much the same everywhere? Is it only available as the album's U.S. configuration, not the U.K. configuration?

2. A Quick One - Is the old Polydor CD the only place to get this in all mono?

3. The Who Sell Out - same as above, the old Polydor CD the only place to get this in all mono?

4. Who By The Numbers - The old CD's with the original stereo mix, they're all pretty close, right?

5. Quadrophenia - I hate the old mix and hate the 'new' mastering. Any news on the supposed SACD release with the 5.1 mix?

The rest, I'm already set with.

Regarding 5...

My sense is that Universal, chastened by the collapse of SACD and standalone DVD-A, is sitting back and seeing what happens with DualDisc and CD/DVD twofers before proceeding with any more major surround releases. (I think Downward Spiral came out in both SACD and DualDisc iterations, and that was the last major pop/rock surround thing Universal did...)

I expect we'll see hell freeze over (or that promised new Who album that Townshend just indefinitely delayed in a post on his site) before a Quadrophenia SACD. ICE had one of their regular catching-up articles with Astley in the last issue, and he said he's working on the Daltrey/Entwistle/Moon solo catalogs (which was puzzling, since new versions of a lot of Daltrey stuff just showed up recently) -- nothing about any Who projects.

Regarding #1, there's a fake stereo version and a real mono version of the original MCA disc...

Regarding 3., the bootlegs (CD) of the mono mix are easy to find. Sound quality is not so great. (I have yet to check the Dr. Ebbetts release.)

Could someone please tell me the matrix numbers for the best available pressing of "Rough Mix." TIA.

Besides the narrow stereo mix, what else did they mess up on the My Generation Deluxe Edition? Besides "My Generation" and "A Legal Matter," any other tracks missing overdubs?

BTW, I'm only interested in the original UK and US album tracks, not the other bonus outtakes. I've got "Who's Missing," etc. so I know I'm covered in terms of true stereo there.

There's an awkward moment in "La--La-La-Lies", right before the middle 8, where the backing vocals just cut off suddenly. I guess they fixed this on the mono mix via a simultaneous overdub.
