Can't Find My Way Home: CSI
Just watched the "Bully for You" episode of CSI. During the scene when they are washing the decomposed body, Can't Find My Way Home is playing. The arrangement is pretty damn close to the Blind Faith original, and it sure sounds like Steve Winwood singing, but it's clearly not the Blind Faith original. Does anyone have *any* idea what version this is? A re-make by Winwood? An (unreleased) alternate take? A search on Google for that episode keeps coming up with Traffic.

I'm guessing it was the band "House Of Lords"...they did a cover awhile back that got radio play. It's been a long time since I've heard it, though, and I can't remember if the singer sounds like Winwood. I think there's an alternate take of the Blind Faith version on the "Deluxe Edition" of the S/T CD.
The way to do these searches is at www.allmusic.com. It will list every cover of that song in the database. Not only that, it will list every time each cover appears on an album...in other words, original album appearance plus EPs and compilations.

Finally found a clip - nope, clearly different. The arrangement on CSI was so close that the average person probably wouldn't know the difference.
The alt take on the DE is the electric version, which is totally different. That's also found on the Winwood box set (in a different mix).

Is the clip credited, and if so is it Blind Faith or Winwood?
I seem to remember a solo version by Winwood at some point getting video play (maybe around the time of the box set), but it was probably a live version and the arrangement would have been "more different" than you describe.

No. The only credit is for WAY. At least on the syndicated version. I think the second season box is somewhere in the house, so I'll check that.
Haven't heard a live version. This came to a full ending, and there wasn't any crowd noise.
It's still on the TiVo, so if I get a chance I'll try and record it. Or grab it from the DVD.
And yeah, allmusic.com was one of the first places I looked...

Never mind -- I got confused and thought you meant you found a clip of the CSI music, not the Hosue of Lords cover.
Yeah, they'll never credit the music in the episodes themselves. Apparently it's cheaper to license that way or something, which makes no sense to me but *no one* credits music in TV shows (even when the music is really good, like Sopranos, Homicide, SFU, etc.) so there must be a good reason.

So I just ripped the DVD, extracted the 5.1 audio to WAVs, converted that on the Mac, mixed in ProTools, and got this (I did the best I could to minimize the show sounds with the 3 front channels):
CFMWH Sample
For a bit I thought I was going crazy. "This must just be the studio version, and any differences are because of however they processed it on the show." But then I lined up the studio version. I still wasn't sure, until I hit Steve's vocal. Here's the end of the studio version:
"Still I can't find my way home [cuts short]...[pause]...and I, can't find my way hoooome, but I, can't find my way home"
And the CSI version:
"Still I can't find [pause] my way home...[pause]...and I, can't find my way home...[pause]...but uh, can't find my way home"
The pause after the "find" gives it away for sure, along with the difference in "home".
This *has* to be an alternate take. But from where? It sounds way too much like the original to be a re-make of some sort.

Just to throw another spanner in the works, on a Wednesday, 12/22/04, I saw a "Crossing Jordan" episode/repeat on A&E that used a female vocal for a version of "Can't Find My Way Home" that was pretty good. I've always loved the music on "Jordan" since it seems to be "close to the bone" of the episodes topics. My fave episode is when they used all Velvet Underground/Lou Reed music for an entire episode (except for incidental music cues).

For what it's worth, the China splash cymbal even sounds a little different to me.

Different as in "recorded at another session" or "another take"?
The EQ/processing is a bit strange on the TV version, but it sure sounds like it could have been recorded at the same time as the original to me.

I'll check it out, I suppose. Bill Levenson didn't seem to know anything about it.
