I ask simply because Macs are theoretically supposed to be the "easier" alternative to PCs...more user friendly, blah blah blah. Yet with the advent of OSX--pretty Unix, really--that's all taken a turn for the byzantine. I work for U of C's Residential Computing department, and the consensus seems ...

Krabapple, I use Missing Media Burner, which is pretty much a command line port of cdda2wav (among other things) for use on Mac OSX. Now I don't have any CDs with pre-emphasis (as far as I know), but I can think of a workaround that may or may not work for you on Windows. On OSX, you can use a progr...

I'll buy it, if only to hear Marianne Faithfull singing "Something Better". I couldn't care less about the 5.1. I don't have that kind of set-up, nor do I ever intend to. I did recently pick up the Abkco DVD of Godard's "Sympathy for the Devil" (only ten bucks at Costco; hope R&R Circus will be ...

Compressed Audio Thread (Codecs, not bad mastering)

Unless I somehow missed it, it appears that there hasn't yet been a thread here which discusses compressed audio technology -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. We've thoroughly (un)covered the "hi-rez" scam, so I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the other end of the spectrum: mp3, AAC, Ogg, ge...

Back on topic: Shush! The great man finally weighs in. Please say it ain't so, Surrogate Daddy! http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=733445&postcount=109 Looks as if there'll be a whole lotta crying, maybe suicidal thoughts, in Audiofool Land today. I say good riddance to that rip-of...

On a related "family values" note there's this: http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2004/09/04/twin_tips/index.html Bush twins swill vodka, stiff the help Mayor Michael Bloomberg hailed the Republican National Convention as an economic boon to the city, but it turned out to be a bust for the poor...

Hugging A Dead (SACD) Horse

Why in the world are people at so many "other" forums (like Audio Asylum and SH) continuing to debate the "Is SACD (and/or DVD-A) dead?" I'm well aware that these people have less than half a brain, but it does seem obvious to me that anyone in possession of even 1/35 of a mere brain stem can tell t...

"Correct" punctuation is geographically relative. This thread inspired me to research the English punctuation rules, in order to see if I did remember my European education correctly. I haven't heard the vinyl, but I can say with absolute certainty that the STEVE HOFFMAN version of Who's Next is the best one ever. It blows all the others away. Magnificent breath of life and no compression! It sounds exactly like the master tape. Soooooo much better than Jon Ghastly's no-noised m...

Thought you'd enjoy this one, krabapple. The endless "jitter" debate continues at the Hoffman forums. Someone by the name of Evan writes: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=38254 "I think that it is jitter control in the manufacturing process. It really depends on the facility and th...

First I upsampled these Harrison CDs to 682734748383 kHz/5928282 bits. My listening tests at 110 db detected subtle but definitely recognizable watery sounds at the 28kHz range, which can only mean NR artifacts, so I plan to toss all these reissues in a bonfire this evening. If you can't hear at 28k...

I don't own the CCR SACD but I did burn the sample to CD-R this afternoon. What I did was put the CD player in repeat mode and let the sample play continuously. Yeah, the volume difference between the two bits is readily apparent, and I agree with Krabapple that these are really two different master...

So will the SH sheep now loudly proclaim that SACD is capable of reproducing a greater quantity of echo with more “lifelike” and “three-dimensional” qualities than poor, lowly redbook does? I suppose it does indeed, particularly if the self-proclaimed Tonmeister’s hand is pushing firmly on the echo ...
