I just did a comparison of "Korn Ring Finger" (the lone song out) and the two CD sources have a ton of hiss. The LP has much less, which I thought was good, until I listened closer and realized that the Sundazed version has been heavily NR'd. That's right folks! "Grow Fins" is th...

Beefheart - Plain Brown Wrapper - Sundazed LP

I just wanted y'all to know that I picked this up, and all the hype surrounding it is just that...hype. It doesn't sound as good as the old sequel disc. It's shrill and "baked" sounding and the stereo channels aren't as wide. If it comes from better tapes, then it wasn't mastered very well...

I found the Virgins to sound exactly like the old CBS, only louder. Except Sticky & Exile, which have been "pumped up" on certain tracks. I'm curious to see what the new ones will sound like. Does this mean that 40 Licks is going out of print?

It's original mixes all the way for me, except the song Rael, for obvious reasons.

I made my own remaster of the 1970 session today, utilizing the BBC disc linked to above, and the Harvested set to fill in the blanks. I'm pretty happy with the results, but the Harvested parts are lousy sounding and raped by noise reduction, compared to the BBC disc. These Harvested guys have no id...

Is there a good place to find Floyd's 68-69 BBC stuff? There appears to be a few Westwood One discs with this mateiral.

That is an excellent question! I just downloaded the Harvested sets yesterday, and they're indeed shit. I'd like to hear the untampered mono broadcasts as well. If you do find them, let me know please! Pink Floyd collectors have very bad taste when it comes to audio. Every Syd Barrett rarities set I...

I don't know how that works. He sampled The Frogs on "Odelay" but there's no mention of it in the liner notes. I guess it depends on how much of it you use.

I'm with Luke. I haven't played the Deluxe Edition since the day it came out, the mixing disgusted me so much. The Classic Records LP is where it's at.

It's not really "brickwalled." The dynamic range in a screenshot evinces digital manipulation, but it doesn't have significantly less dynamic range than, say, the Movements version. Not true. Movements has more dynamic range. Unfortunately it sounds like poo in comparison to a properly EQ...

Okay, the new remaster definitely comes from a better tape, but it's mastered like shit. It's shrill, compressed and brickwalled. At least there doesn't seem to be any NR, at least on the first song. Looks like I'll have to pick this one up after all.
