Let us talk a bit about bits. AFAIK, there is a trade-off here. With noise reduction we introduce non-linearity into a linear system. When we talk about the resolution of a system we are actually talking about resolution in amplitude domain (dynamic range) and resolution in the time domain (bandwid...

Let us talk a bit about bits. So given a master tape where there is nothing above 15 kHz then 16 AD bits is plenty and so is 44.1 kHz sampling rate. Increasing the bitdepth or the sampling rate will do nothing. Ryan is correct in saying that the lower the noise floor the more you are able to reveal...

For an intersting, if sometimes quite technical, discussion of the silliniess of ultrahigh sampling rates,
see this thread on Usenet, and pay particualr attention to the contributions of noted converter designer
Dan Lavry, who comes right out and says, '192 kHz is a crock'.

ThomH: "While this master tape is well within Nyquist (22 kHz) of ordinary Redbook, are you saying that by going to a higher sampling rate you are able to capture more information from this analog tape because more samples are taken of each waveform." LeeS: Thomh, that is exactly what is happening....

The damning stat was that comparison of the reference disc to *a copy of the same disc* were rated as among the most 'different sounding', compared to copies where alterations were made, much to the authors' perplexity -- too fucking funny. It's also funny how stubbornly they cling to the idea that ...

There's an interview with PT in the new Feb/Mar issue of Sound & Vision, concerning the mixing of Tommy. Btw, I too have no idea what the original reviewer is on about....I hear plenty of bass in the surround version. Llike PT says, setting upa 5.1 system is a tricky thing...I wonder if they ahve th...

Dang, I was going to report the good news about the Ziggy SACD; you beat me to it.

Anyway, I too can verify that the stereo tracks of the SACD (either layer) have none of the reported glitches of the 30th Anniversary issue.

It was just me then. Good. I must have not seen the 'previous page' indicator. So, if Mr. Sandoval was in fact contacted by the Gorts first, and Rspaight was subesequently punished for 'harassment', the implication is that Mr. Sandoval answered 'yes' when asked if he felt harassed. Why would he do t...

Is it just me, or have a couple of posts that were on this thread afew days ago, vanished? The one quoted in this one, for example: Based on Mr. McGoodwin's previous post: Quote: I've talked to him. They apparently asked him if he was being "harassed." Cordial and gentlemanly, though, as always. I'd...

I haven't compared the wavs, but I'm 99.99% certain they wouldn't be bit identical. They're clearly different remasterings...different credits and everything.

Clearly 16/44.1 is overkill, compared to vinyl. BRING ON THE LPs.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road SACD: nice job!

This one's a keeper. Intelligent use of surrounds, nice packaging, good bonus tracks, very good sound (a bit 'toppy' as in trebly, but not ear-splittingly so). The album really opens up without losing its essence or defiling one's memory (unlike, say, some of the remxies on Yes' "Fragile' DVD-A). Bt...

Re: The Numbers Game

For those members interested in sampling theory, there is a long and ongoing thread over on the rec.audio.pro newsgroup that you should definitely check out. If you do not feel like going through all the replies, be *sure* to read the ones from EE Dan Lavry. His replies are long and in need of a sp...
