Check out "Maybellene" again, I think there's a signficant difference between the Chess Box and Anthology mastering. The Chess Box version is much more open and the Anthology more compressed. Listen to it a couple of times, focusing on an individual instrument each time - the cymbals, then...

Dude, when you're talking about audiophiles who don't know shit about mastering but pretend to know everything the mastering engineer did out of pure speculation, EXPECT contradictions. At least Hoffman had SOME exposure to Elton John's master tapes from this era. I'd find him more reliable than som...

BTW, more "Definitive Collections" have been issued by Geffen (is that what they're calling it now? Not Interscope or Island or MCA or Universal? They're just calling that monster Geffen?), included a 26-track collection for Buddy Holly that isn't bad, selection-wise. http://www.amazon.com...

If you're not electing Christians, you will legislate sin

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris told a religious journal that separation of church and state is "a lie" and God and the nation's founding fathers did not intend the country be "a nation of secular laws." The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate also said that if...

The Replacements - Sire albums

Rhino is planning to reissue these with bonus tracks, but you may want to hold on to the originals. That probably goes without saying, since Rhino usually compresses everything nowadays, in addition to the usual treble boost. But, I was burning a 'Mats comp and opened a few up to adjust the volume -...

Do the bonuses for the debut's reissue already circulate? The current CD is allegedly a flat transfer (at least, I think Hoffman said it was), so I'm not sure I'd buy this for demos and BBC performances, not unless those outtakes are really good.

Okay, here's the samples, FLAC format, a little over a minute from each source to make room for fade-outs. I tried matching the volume a bit - in every case, Anthology had to be turned down. For "Maybellene" and "Roll Over Beethoven," it was 65% of the original volume, for "...

Yeah, I can do that. I'll be on lunch in an hour, I'll encode them and have them up then. BTW, some of these tracks are just crappy..."Around and Around" sounds like a bad dub on both sets, "Maybellene" has that tape damage towards the end, and "Sweet Little Rock 'n' Roller&...

Woman steals millions....to buy lottery tickets

Very sad. And incredibly stupid. NEW YORK (Reuters) - A woman stole $2.3 million (1.2 million pounds) from her employers and spent the money on lottery tickets, buying as much as $6,000 worth of tickets a day in a bid to hit the jackpot, prosecutors said on Thursday. Annie Donnelly, 38, pleaded guil...

I used to have Great 28, not anymore. I don't recall it sounding better, but that's about it.

I have the Anthology and Chess Box in front of me. I can up a few tracks. Any particular songs you want to hear, Andreas?

MI3 'underperformed,' that's for sure...but I don't blame Cruise. Look at "War of the Worlds," that did well. Look at MI3...War of the Worlds sucked too, but MI3 sucked more and was less interesting. The cat prayer was one of the worst scenes I've ever seen. Wanna puke out your guts? Chec...

Chuck Berry on CD

Anyone see Universal's new Definitive Collection ? It's almost, ALMOST perfect. It basically replaces The Great Twenty-Eight , but has thirty tracks total. Funny, 'cause when I had that CD, I remember thinking, "Man, this would be perfect if only 'Promised Land' and 'You Never Can Tell' was on ...
