That was indeed an interesting thread over there; thanks for the link. I'm really looking forward to this book too.

If Sony is content to let MoFi release its entire mono catalog as hybrids, so be it. I agree; I'm quite interested to see what (if anything) comes next. I will probably cave and grab the Tambourine Man disc before long (I can't remember the last time a SACD came along that I was remotely interested...

Old Van Morrison CDs

Almost a year and half ago, MK posted the above, to no response ... I'm simply replying now to (1) renew the inquiry, and (2) ask MK if he ever made any progress with this. If so, I'd be curious about your findings; I've seen conflicting reports elsewhere on the old-discs-vs-remasters issue. Also .....

Just curious: Did you have a chance to make this comparison?

Again, I'm totally confused about whether it's a good idea or not to make a 16-bit file a higher bitrate before doing any of this --- or even which bitrate it should be, but what the hell. I'm curious, so let's see what happens. I'm wondering the same thing, so I'd definitely be interested in your ...

This is really cool. I like the generally dark atmosphere, and its haunting quality overall. I also like Arnold's voice a lot (I have to say, I'd never heard of her before).

None of them are exclusively collections of alternate versions. Hatful of Hollow and The World Won't Listen each have a few alternate versions of certain songs (the ones that come to mind immediately are an acoustic "Back to the Old House" and a slightly different mix of "The Boy with the Thorn in H...

I still think Louder Than Bombs is the best, though. The sequencing is utterly brilliant. I couldn't even begin to guess how many hundreds of times I've listened to it. I agree. It was my first Smiths disc, and as much as I love The Queen is Dead it is still the one I play most often. Almost all of...

Yes; I don't believe it was ever issued in the States. I've never seen it in a store either. I got mine from Amazon.co.uk, IIRC.

Take this for it's worth, there was a Smiths thread over at sh.tv (must have been a slow day for Beatles threads) and someone had stated that the project was being held up due to some missing masters ("The Queen is Dead" I believe). Oh, crap. And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the track listing...

According to the Very Best of the Smiths liners, it was indeed "remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch at Digiprep." I can't find a mastering credit on my copy of Singles, though.

Re: Smiths - Rough Trade CDs

... that sound better than the really kinda shitty Warners/Sire issues ... If this is true, I'm interested as well. I guess I always presumed the RT and the Sire issues would be the same, or at least not light years apart. (Then again, the '80s RT vinyl I've collected sounds fantastic, particularly...

Fascinating. I'm a big fan of the pre- Period of Transition albums, but Hard Nose indeed has always struck me as the odd one out. I mean, seriously ... "Bein' Green"?? As someone who's only familiar with the official albums from that period, I suppose I need Philosopher's Stone . And that Heylin bio...

I have a soft spot for this album, so I'm quite interested in hearing the new disc. I notice you mention the UK import does not appear to be copy-protected; has there been any indication that the US issue will be?

There's a show coming up in my vicinity (Lehigh Valley, PA) at the beginning of December. I'll probably go, though I was really underwhelmed by the last show I dragged myself to (last year, when I was still in Massachusetts ... the best part of that was a fistfight that broke out between two dealers...
