The sad/funny thing is that it's not impossible to mistake your spoof for a sincere 'audiophile' post. That's a measure of how scientifically impovershed the hobby is.

Other than the "pretty bright and a bit compressed" line, I'd tend to agree with most of what Gardo said, based on what I've heard of the MC mixes. What about "The redbook layer on the SACD sounds pretty good but not as dimensional or smooth as the SACD two-channel layer. "? Expectation bias, anyone?

Your ears have been damaged by a lifetime of compression.

Sounded impressive. Since the CD portion was downsampled I thought it a good way to test the stereo SACD vs CD portion. My testing equipment was a pair of Sony DVP-NS900V players and B&W N805 speakers. I burned a copy of the CD portion of the disc loaded them into the players, synched them up, turn...

Re: We need a FORMAT WAR thread (or twelve)

From what I've seen, you're not a *real* music forum unless you have at least one active thread at all times containing the same boring arguments pro and con SACD/DVD-A. Often these threads carry titles that sound interesting and informative, but in fact contain one or two posts related to the subj...

Re: Why do I bother?

Check this thread: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?s=10d95289e0d0d5d6d63b7718e0ffc2ae&threadid=22998 I find it amusing that even though with all the discussion of digital over there, few (except for Gardo) don't even have a clue about sampling. Gary's avatars always creep me ou...

The Who forums on the Internet have been active with fans debating the relative sound merits of the Quadrophenia reissue, when comparing the MCA pressing to the European Polydor one. Many Americans have sought out the import version, feeling strongly that it sounds better. One thing's for sure: it ...

I just compared the beginning of I'm One - MCA and Japanese Polydor (your CD-R). An inversion test shows them to be identical. I haven't done a bit comparison in EAC, but there's certainly no "extra bass" or anything. Funny how the Polydor copies of both the remix and original mix are identical to ...

Interesting, but aren't you using an inferior Macintosh computer? I have performed similar tests on my Cray (resting on four isolation pods), and the results were always different. Maybe you need to upgrade your system. Bah. I do mine on the Earth Simulator. Nothing less will suffice. We are talkin...

Re: Of ProTools, UD vs UDII, and other digital bits

I've been playing around with EAC a *lot* lately, and thought I'd have some fun with the "compare WAVs" function. Some notes: - As I had previously suspected, based on listening and inversion tests, doing basic editing in ProTools (at least on the Mac) does NOT alter the sound files in any way. I r...

So, no one has heard an explanation for the discrepancy between the OLD party line and the new one, re: Tommy master tapes? (It's the reason I checked into SHtv and here yesterday in the first place, btw...I figured someone in these communities might have heard something.)

It would be interesting to take a bunch of 'audiophiles' who have NOT read Mr. Hoffman's praise and description of the old RCAs , and let each listen to the RCA , the Ryko, and the Virgin reissues *without* knowing which is which, over a prix-approved system. Then have them rate them, sound-wise. Th...

So someone explain to a Who nonspecialist: where the heck did these newly-reported original two-track masters for Tommy come from? I thought we'd been told that those had been *burned in a bonfire* decades ago!

Re: Quadrophenia Question

There's a popular theory that for the *original mix* of Quad, the MCA sucks, the MoFi is only marginally better/different, and that the Polydor is great. Well, I'd tend to agree on the first two counts, but the third is where my findings go astray. My MCA and Polydor copies are *identical* - digita...
