The link was dead by the time I tried it this morning, but I can't say I'm surprised at all by your findings.

Universal to release Stones "Rolled Gold" comp.

From IORR... (Very surprised someone other than Abkco is releasing Stones material.) Decca/Universal confirmed the release of Rolled Gold in CD on November 12 in UK and Europe. It could be released in US too, not confirmation yet. It comes with a new cover art and 40 songs, 12 more than the original...

Howlin' Wolf book

Just finished reading this and have to say it's a pretty good read--very well researched with a lot of firsthand quotes from Wolf, bandmembers, family etc. I think the book gives you a pretty good sense of his complex character—probably about the most decent guy that ever killed someone. Wolf’s hist...

Wow--that's something else. ]Looks like more evidence of the TT 5 stereo songs coming from a single tape source.

Yep. thats a pretty odd one. Always sounded to me like an impromptu jam at the end of a BTB session. Sort of captures the increasingly looney spirit of the times.

Lots of piano (and acoustic) coming through on that. A number of these mono backing tracks have turned up. Often not very good quality though. Incidentally - Oldham's book has a piece on them recording Mother. Apparently the overdub on the intro of the master is (as well as the fuzz guitar) Mick and...

I wonder what Keith is referring to when he says "edit down" (mix down?) and whether the "fantastic mix" he's referring to is this mix with the alternate vocal and loud drums or something we haven't heard (yet?). What's interesting is that even the version without the lead vocal ...

Perhaps the best thing about this release is it gives some hope that there will be more such releases in the future. I think it’s been some time since pre-70s unreleased studio material has come out, especially from decent tape sources. This stereo version of Mother Baby on TT5 is a big leap in term...

I once heard an earlier mix where the drums were a lot clearer. Unfortunately I can't seem to locate that one anymore.

There's an alternate mix with clearer drums and a slightly different lead vocal on the Black Box comp.

I think it's on the BT tracker over at Rocks Off. I can't find it on Youtube but I'm pretty sure that when they played Satisfaction on Shindig they actually mimed to the abandoned Chess version rather than the RCA master. Their first appearance did show them playing to a version with harmonica I thi...

Re the Satisfaction backing track: The stones appeared on a number of other shows besides Sullivan during the mid-'60s, and it's likely just one of those tapes (e.g. Shindig, although that one may have been messed with to censor the lyric). As for the tape speed issues w/Satisfaction backing track, ...

I'm thinking maybe this came from a few different sources, or at least wasn't in the same order on the cassette. The high end problems on Paint It Black and the alth 19th don't plague the standard 19th, which comes immediately after. Heart of Stone sounds a bit different to me, although it might ju...
