"Can't detect write speeds."

Thanks for the tips so far, I can now choose "write CD" in the menu, but then I get this error message. I did try two earlier versions. Maybe my burner is not compatible with EAC:

What version do you recommend? Or do you think I have to try until I find a version that accepts my burner? The reason behind this is I have received a copy of the Toshiba CP 35-3016 Abbey Road CD. Unsurprisingly, this CD is rather bright, so I wanted to burn a copy with pre-emphasis flags set. My E...

EAC burning problem

I can't burn a CD with EAC. The simple reason is that the option "write CD" is not available in the write menu. (It is not highlighted). I can choose and arrange .wav files, I can manipulate the cue sheets, but how can I write? I feel stupid. I have used EAC for ripping countless times, and always E...

Yes, The Who Collection also has what I called "version 2"...in duophonic, for your extra pleasure. Were UK singles and US singles always the same mix? (Excluding the obvious "Substitute".) Couldn't it be that (as well as Pictures Of Lily) the one version was the UK single mix and the other v...

Yes, there are two different mixes of Happy Jack. The difference is a different drum track! Version 1 appears on MBBB and US WBWB, version 2 appears on The Singles, UK WBWB and the box set. Regardless of versions, the UK WBWB really sounds nice, and the MBBB sounds muffled. (I am still waiting for m...

I already participated heavily in the SH version of this thread...anyway, comments: The Kids Are Alright - The UK Who's Better Who's Best has the full version, recommended! Pictures Of Lily - The "correct" version seems to be the one on MBBB. The UK WBWB has the alternate mix, and it sounds better. ...

Here's a question: What came first? Did you listen to the disc, think it sounded like there was serious clipping, and then check the waveforms? Or did you check the waveforms first, notice the clipping, and then listen for it on the disc? In 2001, I found all Linett/Gastwirt remasters great in term...

Ryan

As I said, we are talking about dozens, or in some other examples (Linett Today) of hundreds of samples. Is that a handful?

No, but it's somewhat annoying to pop in a disc and have it be that low in level. Not the end of the world (as some elsewhere might think), but annoying nonetheless. I guess you are primarliy listening on a PC, without amplifier? Because, otherwise I really can't imagine why this would be annoying....

Well...so? Can you *hear* dozens of clipped samples per song? Or even hundreds?

I am not sure. Can you hear that one bit less is used for resolution?

Rspaight wrote:Sure, if you don't mind only getting 13 or 14 bits of resolution instead of the full 16.

I am afraid to tell you that your math is inorrect here. If 50 % were the maximum volume, you lose exactly one bit of resolution. I prefer this over digital distortion at every volume peak.

Eh...why is that a good thing? I haven't looked at any waveforms for the Linett discs, but there's certainly nothing wrong with hitting 100%. As long as things aren't compressed beyond belief, how much do a few clipped peaks matter? A peak of 60% seems like laziness. It may sound great, but it shou...

Just wanted to add that I have found the Pasmasters Friends, and it is as good as expected. Eq-wise, the difference is not so big versus the Linett remaster, but the latter does have some (mild) boost in the upper midrange. Some people might prefer this, because it brings up the vocals (I don't). Th...

So where does one find the unedited version of "The Kids are All Right"? Is it available at all nowadays? On the Maximum R&B box set. Also, on the (out-of-print but easy to find in Europe) Polydor version of Who's Better Who's Best. The stereo remix on the My Generation DE is also the long vers...

Who would actually regret it if all the remixes were gone? The only one that serves a purpose is Rael, because the missing verse is restored. (The remix still sucks because the background vocals don't sound as smooth and balanced. And digital reverb.)
