Sadly, I only have a few of the SOT titles (*cough*). I have the stereo Today/Summer Days twofer, the Alternate Smiley Smile , and disc 1 of the Smile set. I'm still stuck with just those three discs so far. Does anyone have any recommendations for which SOT titles I ought to track down next? The o...

As the great Brian Wilson said in concert: " The next song is an instrumental, which means there are no words."

b) Yeah, the early-version and late-version HR2 are definitely different, despite not much changing concretely between the two issues. The EQ is different enough so to quite-obviously show up on a frequency analysis.

What fade-ups on Hot Rocks 2?

If you want, I can send a pm to Steve with your explanation about what happened. Steve is usually way cooler than (some of) his gorts when it comes to censoring or banning.

krabapple, I am not sure if I interpret the waveforms correctly, but the old dull Atlantic Fragile CD (which was not mastered by Barry Diament) shows the most dynamics to me. Take the track "Long Distance Turnaround", turn up the volume and concentrate von Jon's vocals. On the Atlantic CD,...

Re: Fragile I don't understand how one can praise the Gastwirt Fragile. The vocals sound unreal; there is far too much air and treble around them. It sounds very similar to his attempt at Close To The Edge. Is it established that the Atlantic Gold CD is the same as the standard Gastwirt remaster?

In this case it comes down to this question for SH (which someone else will have to ask) what makes tweaking the dull-sounding Fragile tapes a necessity, while for the dull-sounding Elton John tapes its a no-no? I didn't understand Steve in that way. He said that the eq on the DJM was too extreme. ...

That's one of their commandments, a flat transfer is always preferable unless Steve mastered the album, then a flat transfer becomes unlistenable crap...unless Steve's mastering IS a flat transfer, in which case he did the right thing! "Their"? That"s quite some generalization...

At least Hoffman had SOME exposure to Elton John's master tapes from this era. I'd find him more reliable than some guy who's never stepped foot in a mastering suite. Absolutely true. On the other hand, "Your Songs" (MCAD-31016, mastered from MCA safety copies by Steve) is clearly worse t...

Check out "Maybellene" again, I think there's a signficant difference between the Chess Box and Anthology mastering. In the three samples that you posted, the second one always sounds compressed and harsher, but also with more bottom end. I guess I prefer the G28 in all three cases becaus...

It's whatever you want it to be, baby. Are you saying that imagination and auto-suggestion are the major parts of such discussions? Probably yes...but you surely noticed that some of the quotes above totally contradict each other (with respect to facts!). MFSL cannot at the same time 1. transfer th...

I just received the MFSL Madman and compared it to the DJM. The only difference I seem to notice is upper midrange, of which the DJM has more. It gives the album more life, but it also thins the drum sound, in my opinion. I am not sure which I prefer at the moment. A typical review of the MFSL: The ...

So has anyone anything interesting to say about those Chuck Berry samples? I haven't had the time to listen closely yet, but I didn't notice big differences right away. The Great Twenty-Eight does not compete badly in this comparison.

Here are the three relevant tracks from the Great Twenty-Eight, first minute of each. (I normalized the entire tracks after the extraction, and then edited them). Maybellene: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=5CD0F64C2D214F27 Roll Over Beethoven: http://www.yousendit.com...
