The "high frequency transients" fallacy

I have been skimming the "Why does vinyl (analog) sound better?" thread over on SHtv and WRT transients there is a great thread over on the Dan Lavry forum where he lays this audiophool myth to rest. http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/mv/msg/4097/0/0/0/ I dunno, some SHtv members m...

Beatles remaster rumor

Browsing through this thread on the PSW forum: http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/t/10893/0/ this caught my eye: http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/04/20060412094414.shtml According to Starpulse, the Beatles catalog is in the process of being remastered for distribution on iTunes. "We'...

David, I saw that you brought up the ol' jitter article by Roger Nichols over on SHtv: http://stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=1667374&postcount=102 For the record, that little mess was cleared up some time ago and your hunch that Roger was "hearing things" was not too far off: ht...

The problem is that all this research has not been done by me. I don't even have an SACD player (shock!). I prefer to post things that I either observed by myself, or that I can confirm by myself. Fair enough. Check your PM. Of course, I could confirm that there appear to be clipped samples on the ...

There is too much noise in that thread so I would suggest starting a new one.

About those clipped samples...they don't look "severely" clipped. More like AF Minute By Minute and DCC Eagles Greatest Hits, both of which have clipped samples. When I look at the rest of the songs and compare my SACD A-D transfers to the CD rip, the numbers all match up except for Fortu...

So if it it's not down to EQ, the sonic differences between the LP and CD may be due to... So, given a well-designed analog stage, if a lossy format like MD (ATRAC Type-R) can capture it, I don't see why uncompressed PCM wouldn't be able to do it as well. I performed a few bias-controlled A/B tests...

I agree with Krab on this one. If the numbers in the SFM xls file are correct there is no need to waste time with listening tests. Even though DSD does provide the *potential* for greater dynamic range, it is the master tape in question that sets it and I hardly think that there is >90dB DR on that ...

Remember to check in from time to time on this thread as well.

Basically kills the transient myth that certain audiophiles cling to.

SACD "needle drops"

From this SHtv thread "needle drop" SACD I recently did a couple of transfers of SACDs to PCM through the analog connections. The result was as bit of a letdown as any other redbook CD in comparison. I decided that there wasn't really a reason to do this, unless the commercial CD counterpart was rea...
