That's got to be a joke! I have that disk. I like it fine (I have asentimental spot for that album), but could it possibly be worth that money to someone?

That was great, thanks! Love the funky feedback rave-up section at the end. Does anyone know when the heads began to conclude the song that way in concert? If I'm remembering correctly (and I could just be forgetting) the earlier live versions didn't have that nor do the later ones.

Can't help with the Who Came First comparison, but I like the Oceanic Concerts disk. The mastering is not so bad that it gets in the way of the music for me. I'm a sucker for just listening to Pete in that sort of situation, so I'll put up with a lot (the La Jolla sets, by the way, are consistently ...

Maybe you're right about the tape and the CD, all I'm saying is that my needledrop of the the vinyl sounds bright in a different and to me more pleasing way than the CD sounds bright. Turning down the treble on the CD does not make it sound like the needledrop, which has a bunch of other characteris...

The original vinyl is bright. In fact, everything recorded at Ardent Studios during this period could be characterized as "bright." It's just the Ardent signature sound. That's true, but there are different kinds of bright. I, like Chris, have a needledrop of the original vinyl, and the brightness ...

Re: John Zorn's Masada String Trio

Saw this great group at the DC Jewish Community Center as the opening night of the Jewish Music Festival. Now, I'm not much of a fan of klezmer, but saying this was a klezmer group is like saying Eddie Van Halen has decent technique. Zorn has composed some 300 tunes for this ensemble, and they play...

Dave,

Thanks for the check on the "London Town" disk. Although all I've really needed to know if that my Fame copy does sound good (and I knew that already), it's good to know that there were no just as good and much cheaper copies around!

There's also nice versions of it on "Live at the BBC" and "Live in Boston, Vol. 2."

I think the box sounds great! Good enough, in fact, to keep me from spending my presently depleted reserves on the newer Hoffman Hybrid SACD. The tracks that that disk shares with the box do sound better, but the box is still good enough for me right now. Also: it's got just about everything you cou...

1) Am I correct that Oh Well is *not* on this box? The listing at Deep Discount seems a bit misleading here.

2) Has Oh Well ever shown up in stereo?

Your first question: Yes, you are correct.

Don't know the answer to the other one.

McCartney Fame disks

By the way, Dave, thank you for doing the comparison and bringing this to our attention. I hope someone gets a chance to do a little more comparing. I paid about $17 for a copy of "London Town." I like it fine, but I'd like to know if I could have gotten the same sound on an $8 used Capitol! L.

So, has anyone been able to establish that what Dave says is true of McCartney II is true of other Fame and Capitol titles?

I'd really like to know!

Uh...yes. I think I'd say that's a positive recommendation. I can add, by the way, that a cdr of a Japanese version of "Wings Greatest Hits" of similar vintage sounds almost as good as the Fame "London Town." I'm not sure these things are all that easy to find in the US, but I think they're worth lo...

Dave, I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you on this, but time has been short. I got a copy of the Fame version of "London Town" and a cdr of "Venus and Mars." Both of them sound pretty great to me, although the original recording of VAM is, as I was led to believe, not all that good, ...

A friend picked up a pair of them in the UK. I'll be picking up one and a dub of the other early next week, and I'll give you a report. I think one of the titles is "Venus and Mars," but I don't remember which the other one was.
