Re: The Grass Roots - Anthology: 1965-1975

The long lost Grass Roots CD is that mono edition that might never come, the single versions. That said, they have a long history of remixes/redos, from the first and second album's versions of "Where Were You When I Needed You" to longer fades and remixes heard on the (I presume Rhino) CD...

Re: Boomer history ends on September 9 (Beatles remasters)

Well, the predictable verdict for both mono and stereo editions: Some are happy, some are sad, most of the rest of the world doesn't give a shit. I like the mono edition for the later discs, but they don't blow away any clean vinyl I own. As for the stereo...it is what it is, but finally original mi...

Re: Burl Ives

It's understandable you won't find many folks these days waxing rhapsodic about ol' Burl...who wasn't just a fine singer, but could act a little too (see EAST OF EDEN for proof). He was his own man--into old folkie and trad tunes, who finally went 'pop' with Owen Bradley around '61 with "(It's ...

Fascinating....and, like the DE itself, a total mess, IMO. To get into how much I think it sux would be too depressing....

Guys,

What did you think of the DE mix? And would it be possible to make one closer to a '60s sound' or anywhere near the original mono Lp(and singles)?

Yeah, I listened....that's fairly incredible, way too obvious for a pro to miss, which is what's fueling my concern that maybe it's some kind of doctored 'stereo-from-mono'....how else can one account for that delay? That's way off....

They must be asleep over at BSN...no mention of this at all! Hmmm... Interesting but gotta ask, Luke, before I go out and get this one...does the mix sound 'honest' to you, or is it something that sounds unnatural, even doctored, like the Hendrix box set's "Highway Chile" or some of the Who '60s sin...

Patience, Luke, patience...don't need the samples--I have the discs, and more besides--and will give them another listen when I'm near the sound system(laptops are useful, but not for listening to anything, I'm afraid! Find your way to that sound system yet, Ed? Ah Luke....keeping an eye on your be...

Ok, now I'm really confused... Do what I do: go with its gentle flow.... The mono LP was or wasn't issued in 1966? Very, very limited pressings...if it was officially released, it didn't hang around long, the beast goes for obscene prices these days... The stereo LP wasn't issued until 1969? ...

The mono mix isn't the problem; the mastering is. BACK TO MONO is in definite need of a serious re-do.... As for the stereo..for a guy who started wearing a "Back To Mono" button in the '70s(PS's XMAS ALBUM reissue on Apple), Spector nonetheless didn't mind mixing to stereo when he was in the mood, ...

Luke, We could spend the rest of our days getting into what sound is 'better' or 'inferior'....life is too short. My point is simply that something is going on with the new release, pertaining to the later stuff produced by Tom Wilson, that wasn't apparent previously. I'm using the original mono and...

Jesus, Luke, you're getting more 'wordy' than I am! I wasn't suggesting 'NR' was applied all over the place; just selectively. What's more, the hiss levels could have been adjusted during mastering without NR; nothing a little reduction in the higher frequencies won't accomplish, and going by...

Well, there is NR scattered throughout the Animals disc, as would be expected given the nature, especially, of the later tapes, which, indeed, do 'swim' with hiss.... As you pointed out, Luke, the early stuff comes off very well, although there is no major improvement(if any)compared to THE S...

The condition of the original stereo DOFP tape is a point of contention. Since a few cuts were used for the TT box set, one assumes that. Yet, I had the chance, recently, to ask Tony Clarke about it(at Mike Pinder's site), and he said engineer Derek Varnals went back and remixed the album because th...

Well, originally, there were TWO labels: the familiar brown crescent, and the 'boxed logo' label that reads 'distributed by London.' If you get the boxed logo pressing, you're guaranteed an original mix, as that label variant kind of died away around '72, and even then, I've only found it on a limit...
